We grabbed the following resources from the motorola page in Sep2001 before they closed down their modem support section.

	Download SM56 Drivers Updates are available as either a single file if your upgrading at your PC or two files (each file fits on a floppy disk) if you're away from your PC. Each downloaded file is self-extracting by double-clicking on the file. To upgrade your SM56 modem, follow these steps for the Windows operating system: 1. Finding What Type of SM56 Modem I Have   Select Start, Settings, Control Panel from the desktop. 2. Open the Control Panel and double-click on the Modems icon. 3. Click on the Diagnostics tab. 4. Click on the COM Port assigned to the SM56 modem. 5. Click on the More Info.. button. 6. Find ATI7. ATI7 indicates what SM56 modem you have as follows: ATI7 Text With   Indicates Your Modem Is Fax Modem   Data/Fax Speakerphone Modem   Data/Fax/Speakerphone 2. Preparing the SM56 Upgrade Backup the Original Version 1. Open Explorer and select File, New, Folder. Create C:\SM56 Backup. 2. Select Start, Find, Files or Folders from the Start menu to locate SM56set.exe. User's Tip - Write down the name of the folder where the previous version of the SM56 driver is archived. You may need this information to reinstall your modem if the upgrade is unsuccessful or if problems between the modem and computer occur later. 3. Select and copy all the files in that directory to C:\SM56 Backup. You now have a backup copy of your SM56 modem should you need to reinstall it.   Download the Driver 1. Download the driver for your modem and operating system. Right click on the link for a desired driver file. 2. Select Save Link As or Save Target As from the menu depending on your browser. Download the self-extracting .exe file to the desktop or files to floppy disks. Note - If the download is interrupted, repeat the above steps so the files download without interruption. 3. Double-click on the zipped .exe file(s) to extract the driver to your computer's hard drive. 4. In the Unzip to Folder box, type C:\SM56 Drivers or another folder name. Click Unzip. WinZip creates the directory for you and confirms when the files have been extracted. Click Close. User's Tip - You may have created a folder other than C:\SM56 Driver. If so, write down the name of the folder. You will need this information later to successfully complete the installation. 5. Go to C:\SM56 Drivers or other folder using Explorer and double-click on SM56set.exe. A dialog box appears having detected the previous SM56 modem. 6. Click Yes to proceed with the upgrade. A message box appears displaying where you can find a second copy of the previous SM56 modem. 7. Click OK. After the SM56 software upgrade is installed a dialog box appears. 8. Click Yes to reboot your computer. Your PC will recognize your existing modem as new hardware. To complete the upgrade and configure your system to recognize the modem, proceed to the next section Installing the SM56 Modem. 3. Installing the SM56 Driver After having downloaded and unzipped the driver and restarted your computer, you can now complete the installation. The instructions in this section use Windows Millenium as an example. Installing the SM56 driver on other operating systems, such as Windows 95/98, follow these general procedures however the dialog boxes will appear somewhat different. User's Tip - To complete these procedures and successfully upgrade your SM56 modem, have the name of the folder ready where you unzipped the downloaded driver. 1. Windows detects the installed PCI card and displays the New Hardware Found message box. The Add New Hardware Wizard appears. 2. Click on the "Specify the location of the driver (Advanced)" button. Then click on Next. The Add New Hardware Wizard displays the next dialog box. 3. To locate the new driver, check Specify a location. Uncheck Removable Media. Click Browse to select the location of the driver you noted earlier. Click on Next. The following dialog would appear, for example. 4. Click Next to complete the upgrade. The following dialog box appears. 5. Click on Finish. The following dialog box appears. Windows finds the SM56 upgraded driver. When Windows returns to the screen, the modem is ready for use. 4. Reinstalling the SM56 Driver (if needed) If a problem occurs while upgrading your SM56 modem, such as a power loss, reinstall the original driver so you can continue to use your modem. 1. Open the Control Panel. Select Add/Remove Programs. 2. Click on SM56 Modem and then click on Add/Remove. The uninstall program starts running. If SM56 Modem in not listed, then skip step 3. 3. Close all open windows and restart the computer. 4. Find the original driver in C:\SM56 Backup. Click SM56set.exe. See the sections Downloading the SM56 Upgrade and Installing the SM56 Driver for steps to complete the reinstallation.   NOTE: If you have an SM56 Voice Modem (data/fax modem with an answering machine), download a compatible SM56 Speakerphone driver.
